Wicked fun, but plenty of the ridiculous too.

First, let me say that I really, REALLY enjoy this game. You absolutely must have the motion plus attachment to get the most out of the game, too. I actually did take my motion plus off once and played that way... and not only did I lose a substantial amount of control over what I was doing with the swing, but the feedback is pretty worthless too. With the motion plus you get the club face angle and the direction of the swing. Without the motion plus you get only the direction. Also, one great improvement in my mind is that it's much more difficult to hole out a shot from the fairway. I played TW 09 about a dozen times (renting it) and had about 15 holes-in-one and numerous other eagles by sinking it from the fairway. When the heart thumps started and the close-up on the ball came on, I learned to leave the spin alone because that thing was going in the hole EVERY TIME. On TW 10 the heart thumps mean it's getting CLOSE, but I've only had one ace in two months of play... and I like it since it's more realistic.
I have found an oddity in the game as far as game play is concerned. If you are a LEFT-HANDED golfer using the "Play Now" feature, you will be playing as Tiger (who is obviously right-handed), and you will see left-handed draw (with the ball flying left-to-right) show up as a fade for the right-handed Tiger (which makes sense, as a right-handed fade also flies left-to-right), and vice versa. You can make your own custom golfer as a lefty and he or she will appear left-handed on the screen.
So, that being said, there is much to ridicule about this game. Most of it happens if you happen to be pretty good at it. Let's suppose you're playing a tournament and (either because you're that good or have a great round) shoot something like a 61 or lower, and nobody else has shot better than 67 or so. You would think that you have a nice cushion, right? Well, you do until you tee off the next round. The computer AI apparently thinks anyone who shoots 61 is a sandbagger (for the non-golfer, that's someone who is a lot better than he or she claims to be and shoots much better than his or her handicap). As a result, in the next round (and subsequent rounds in that tournament), the computer-controlled players will start shooting scores like 56 or 57 so that they can catch up to you. The problem is, if you don't normally shoot as low as 61 and wind up following it with 67 or 68, you're now behind, and you won't catch up unless you can shoot 55 or so in the round following. So to win a tournament you must either (a) hold back by missing putts or hitting the occasional shot out of bounds so you don't beat the AI players by too much, or (b) simply shoot 54 or 55 each round so they can never catch up.
Within all that are the individual updates. It's interesting to read that someone in the tournament has double-eagled a hole... especially if it's a par 3, since that means the score on the hole was a ZERO!!!!! Tell me how that works, please? I've yet to finish a hole in TW golf (or in real golf, for that matter) with a ZERO! The only thing that was nearly as ridiculous as that was noticing that someone had made a hole-in-one... on #2 at TPC Sawgrass, which is a par-5!
Needless to say, I try to ignore those stupid updates and play my game, but it's a little annoying to think that for all the effort they put into the game, such stupid things are a part of it. Maybe they'll fix it for TW 11, but who knows... |

This game is just the kind I wanted when I bought the Wii. They have improved it a lot over 09 and using the Wii Plus just makes it that much better. The whole idea is computer games is to meet certain goals to increase your skills and performance, so no, it's not going to be great until you work your way up, take the challenges, increase your skill level and buy items which also increase your skills. I had to learn that with 09. Now that I know it I like 10 even better.
Some of the challenges are very easy, some are very hard. Isn't that the whole point of a game? |
A great idea...finally perfected!

If you have ever hesitated to buy Tiger Woods before, then you should not hesitate to buy it now!
Purchasing the Wii Motion Plus brings this game on par with a new level of realism with the Wii Motion Plus capturing every nuance that your wrist has to offer. Want to fade your shot? Not a problem as long as you master the technique of spinning your wrist on a shot in the correct direction! Hitting straight can now be a challenge if you fail to keep from rotating your club during a swing!
The Wii Motion Plus controller is simply amazing in its ability to capture how you're holding your club and how you're swinging it. It certainly has brought Tiger Woods truly at a high level on the Wii platform to make you wonder why you would ever play it on any other console. This is what the Wii was made for and Electronic Arts finally "gets it."
Another fun little feature is the game's ability to take real weather data and apply it to the course that you're playing on. I even went to the trouble of verifying the actual weather...it's spot on.
Other fun features include disc golf which is fun for the whole family as well.
If you do decide to buy the game, try to get the Tiger Woods 10 Bundle which includes the Wii Motion Plus for $10 more. This is typically cheaper than getting the Wii Motion Plus on its own which normally retails for $19.99.
Have fun golfing! You will NOT be disappointed. |
Best golf video game to date

I have been playing Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf since its early editions on my old Pentium PC. It has truly come a long way, and the series has motivated me to take up the real game. This version has become the most realistic to date in simulating the golf swing, with the integration of the Wii MotionPlus. I would personally like integration with the Wii Balance Board (but it is not truly wide enough, for most people's golf stances) which could help in increasing difficulty by using the proper weight shift.
You are now able to fade or draw the ball, in the advanced setting (you can also pull, slice, hook or push your shots also). The graphics, dynamic weather feature and new courses/players make this a very entertaining game with a high replay factor. Putting is closer to life than any prior version. In fact, TW2010 simulates real putting quite accurately (minus the weight of the club and feel of the contact of the putter with the ball). Pitch shots are more accurate than TW2008 and registration of your movements do not lead to quirks that I frequently experienced (swinging forward ended up making a backswing and bringing the club down made a 20 to 60 yard shot). Set up for players of all abilities, your child can compete with you in All Play mode while you can take on advanced settings. Other additions such as Arcade Mode and Frisbee golf make this a great 'party' game, too.
Your ability to customize your golfer still exists, like in previous versions, and your 'experience' points allow you to improve your golfer's attributes. You can still compete with the tour professionals in the PGA Tour Season but now the FEDEX Cup standings has been included. The flyby view and commentaries allow the users to get a feel of 'being there'. They have replaced the original announcers with Kelly Tilghman (Golf Channel) and Scott Van Pelt, which is a refreshing change. Courses are very accurate in their depictions; now included are the Bethpage Black Course which is one of the most challenging courses in the world of golf and Torrey Pines. I love the nostalgia of playing the Old Course at St Andrews and playing Pebble Beach. One course that is still missing (that I would welcome in a future edition) is Augusta National - Home of the Masters, the equivalent of the Super Bowl for Golf.
I have yet to compete on the world stage with online play, but I look forward to doing so in the coming months.
Overall, this game satisfies my golf desires when I cannot make it out to the real golf course. I would go on to say that this game alone is worth getting a Wii, if you love golf.

| My husband plays this game, and it is a lot of fun. It is challenging enough for him to play by himself, but easy enough for us to play with friends that have never played before. The motion pack makes this game much more difficult, but I like the challenge. |
